Australia Fills Oceania's October Slate With 30 Events

October brings 30 tracked tournaments to Oceania, and nearly every one of them is Australian. That’s partly a real reflection of where the region’s organised chess activity sits, and partly a data gap: Australia doesn’t consistently report through chess-results, the source behind most of this calendar, so plenty of club and state events likely exist beyond what’s captured here.

We don’t have player counts for most of the month’s entries either, which makes this more a map of where chess is happening than a ranking of the biggest fields.

Melbourne hosts a cluster of junior rapid championships on October 3rd, with the 2026 Victorian Junior Rapid Championship U18 Open leading a full slate of age-group and girls’ divisions run by Hobsons Bay Chess Club, from U12 through U18. It’s a one-day rapid format spread across multiple sections at the same venue, which is typical of how Victoria organizes its junior calendar.

Toowoomba offers the month’s longest classical event. The 2026 Byron Capital Darling Downs Open - Premier Division runs October 1st to 5th, with a parallel Major Division starting two days later and finishing on the same date.

Sydney gets a women-only classical event when the 2026 NSW Womens Championship takes place October 3rd to 5th under organizer William Gletsos. Perth’s contribution is more casual in format: the 2026 Perth Club Allegro Championship stretches across more than a week, from October 7th to 14th, run by the Perth Chess Club.

Canberra’s long-running weekly series continues too, with Street Chess 3 October 2026 offering a rapid one-day event on the 3rd. Adelaide’s players get a three-day classical option the same weekend in the 2026 SACA Labour Day Major, organised by the South Australian Chess Association and running October 3rd to 5th.

Later in the month, Melbourne Chess Club stages the 2026 MCC Greg Hjorth Open, a classical event beginning October 30th and running into November. Around the same weekend, Geelong hosts the 2026 Victorian Seniors Championship on October 31st and November 1st.

Between the junior rapids, the state championships, and the club series like Street Chess, Australia’s October calendar leans heavily on classical weekend formats and one-day rapids rather than marquee international opens. Whether any of these produce standout results worth revisiting is the kind of thing only next month’s numbers will tell.
