Mexico and Canada Led North America's Chess Calendar in August 2026

August’s tournament calendar in North America tracked 162 events across the continent, though only a portion of them came with reported player counts. Of those, Mexico and Canada dominate the top of the list, with a scattering of entries from Central America and the Caribbean rounding things out.

The biggest field by a comfortable margin was SELECTIVO PILARES 2026, a one-day rapid event in Mexico City’s Benita Galeana district that drew 212 players on August 16. Organized by PILARES CDMX, it dwarfed every other event we have numbers for this month.

Canada supplied the second-largest gathering: the 2026 8.22-8.23 Chess4win August FIDE Ladder Open, a classical event that pulled in 138 players over its two days. Chess4win, based out of the Toronto area, also placed several smaller events further down the list, including a Friday night rapid and a youth-focused qualifier.

Mexico’s marquee classical event of the month was the Cto. Nacional e Internacional “Aguascalientes 2026”, which ran August 6 to 9 in Aguascalientes with 115 players registered. That championship was actually split across several parallel sections, run by the same organizer, IO Florentino de Jesus Reyes Berlie, with additional sections logging 49, 44, 40, 39, and 33 players respectively. Add those up and the Aguascalientes championship as a whole processed well over 300 entries across its divisions, even though no single section cracked the top two spots.

Canada’s 2026 AFM1st Peel Region - Summer Heat CC - August in Mississauga, Ontario drew 93 players over its late-August weekend, with a companion under-section event later in the list adding another 34.

Outside those two countries, the standout was the V Panama Chess Open 2026, held over five days at the Torres De Alba Hotel & Suites in Panama City with 83 players, organized by the Federación Panameña de Ajedrez. Honduras hosted continental youth chess with the Campeonato Panamericano U-20 2026 in San Pedro Sula, drawing 37 players for a regional under-20 championship. Aruba’s CARIBBEAN CHESS CUP 2026 - OPEN at the Radisson Blu brought in 38 for a five-day classical event.

A few caveats are worth flagging. None of these listings came with prize fund figures or rating requirements in the data we pulled, so we can’t say anything about stakes or eligibility beyond who showed up. And the United States, despite almost certainly running dozens of events in August, doesn’t reliably report player counts to the sources behind this data, so it’s essentially invisible in this ranking even though it likely hosted plenty of tournaments worth covering.
