Perth Hosts International Field as Oceania's September Calendar Leans Local

Oceania’s tournament calendar for September 2026 is modest in size but heavy on Australian club activity, with 14 tournaments tracked across the continent. Perth, Melbourne, Sydney, Canberra and Adelaide all get a turn on the schedule, and the month’s headline event arrives right at the end of it.

The 2026 Perth International Open runs September 25-28 in Perth, organized by Andrew Hardegen. It’s the closest thing this month has to a marquee open, running alongside a companion event, the 2026 Perth Minor, on the same dates for players looking for a section better suited to their rating.

Perth stays busy through the month. The 2026 Perth Chess League Round 5 takes place September 22, and the club scene there closes out September with a doubleheader on the 30th: the 2026 John Brooke Cup Round 7 and the 2026 Wolfgang Leonhardt Cup Round 7, both run by Perth Chess Club.

Melbourne carries some of the month’s more distinctive entries. Canberra and Adelaide round out the geography. Canberra’s long-running weekly series continues with Street Chess 5 September 2026, a rapid event on the 5th, while Adelaide opens its pennant season with the 2026 SA Pennant Teams A Grade Round 1 on September 22.
