History
The Bangkok Chess Club Open is run by its founder, Kai Tuorila, and was first held at a resort in Pattaya. It has since moved between Bangkok and resort towns such as Hua Hin, usually timed to coincide with Songkran, the Thai new year.
It attracts a mix of grandmasters and travelling amateurs, and Nigel Short has won it three times. The 2026 edition finished in a nine-way tie on 7/9, including Nigel Short and Loek van Wely, with Vietnam’s Dau Khuong Duy taking the title on tiebreak.
