History

The Rilton Cup is named after Tore Rilton, a Swedish doctor and chess player who in 1971 donated money to the Stockholm Open with instructions to “organise a strong chess tournament”. The first edition, over the New Year of 1971–72, was won by Jan Timman.

Played between Christmas and early January, it now serves as the opening event of the FIDE Circuit. Pranesh Munirethinam completed his grandmaster title by winning the 2022–23 edition, and Xu Xiangyu won 2025–26 by a full point.
