Barcelona's Sants Open and a Romanian Rapid Lead Europe's August Field

August’s tournament calendar in Europe was topped, by registration numbers at least, by a rapid event in Transylvania rather than one of the continent’s classical institutions. The Alba Grand Prix Rapid 2026 in Alba Iulia, Romania drew 402 players over a single weekend (August 1-2), the biggest field recorded on the continent this month among tournaments with known player counts.

Right behind it came the XXVII Open Internacional de Sants - Ciutat de Barc in Barcelona, a classical event at Cotxeres de Sants that ran nearly the entire back half of the month, August 21-30. Its 355 entrants made it the largest classical open on this list, and notably the Sants event was actually split across at least three separate sections in the data, with companion groups drawing 255 and 164 players respectively, pushing its combined footprint well past 700 players.

Greece put two events into the top ten. The 19th KALAMARIA International Open Tournament 2026, staged at the Municipal Theatre in Kalamaria from August 28 into early September, attracted 299 players, while the 9th SKG International Open Tournament 2026 in Thessaloniki brought in 255 for its run at the Holiday Inn.

Italy’s entry came with a twist: the 24 Torneo Int. Spilimbergo Master (rating over2000) restricted its 264-player field to those rated above 2000, one of the few events in the data with an explicit rating floor. A lower-rated companion section, the 24 Torneo Int. Spilimbergo Open A (rating 1700-209), added another 176 players in the 1700-2099 band.

Hungary’s Kanizsa Open and Hungarian Championship 2026 in Nagykanizsa pulled 243 players across its nine-day run, doubling as part of the national championship structure. Romania added a second big field with the 19th Arad Open Grand Prix Classic, which shows up twice in the data at 219 players, suggesting either duplicate listings or parallel sections tracked separately.

Belgium, the Netherlands, Ukraine and Bulgaria rounded out the next tier. The Brugse Meesters 2026 Open in Bruges drew 216, the Scheldemond Chess Tournament 2026 in Vlissingen had 215, and two single-day rapid events, the UKRAINIAN CHESS STARS CUP in Lviv and the SOFIA CUP 2026 - BALKAN RAPID CHAMPIONSHIP in Sofia, each attracted 192 players in a single day.

A word on scope: this ranking covers only tournaments where a player count was actually reported, and 783 tournaments were tracked across Europe in August overall. Plenty of national opens, especially in countries whose federations don’t consistently report entry figures to chess-results.com, simply aren’t represented here despite likely drawing solid fields. Treat this as a snapshot of the best-documented events, not a complete census.
