Brazil Dominates South America's Biggest August Fields

August in South America produced 801 tracked tournaments. Ranked by registered players, Brazil’s grassroots rapid scene claimed most of the top spots, with Colombia and Argentina landing notable entries of their own.

The month’s largest field by a clear margin was JE TV Sergipe 2026 - Lista Geral, a rapid event at Colégio Salesiano in Aracaju that drew 368 players from August 28-30.

Colombia’s biggest showing came from the XXXVI Festival Panamericano de la Juventud Abs y F, a blitz event held at Medellin’s Coliseo de Combate Guillermo Gaviria Correa on August 1. It pulled 292 players, the second-largest field anywhere on the continent this month.

Back in Brazil, the Copa LBX Sul de Minas - Copa Caxambu, a single-day rapid tournament in Caxambu, Minas Gerais, drew 280 players on August 8. That’s part of the broader Circuito das Vertentes structure that shows up repeatedly in this data, a sign of how much of Brazil’s tournament volume runs through regional rapid circuits rather than one-off opens.

Argentina’s entry came from Rosario, where the Cuarta Etapa del Grand Prix Infantojuvenil attracted 200 players to a rapid event at La Fluvial on August 8, run through the city’s municipal chess program.

Venezuela’s biggest reported field was the Festival de Ajedrez Dia de Galicia, a four-day classical tournament at the Hermandad Gallega in Caracas that ran August 22-25 and drew 151 players.

Colombia also placed the IRT Abierto de Ajedrez Rápido Festival de Verano in Bogotá, a two-day rapid open at the CEFE Cometas center that brought in 148 players on August 29-30, organized jointly by the city’s sports institute and its chess league.

Rounding out the group with fields above 100 were a cluster of Brazilian events: the Circuito Sicoob de Xadrez Escolar school circuit stop in Goiânia (140 players), Colombia’s Juegos Intercolegiados de Ajedrez Cartagena (134), and the Nordestão 2026 - Memorial Machado de Assis classical event in João Pessoa (129).

801 tournaments were tracked across the continent in August, and this ranking covers the ones where a player count was actually recorded. Brazil’s regional rapid circuits alone accounted for several of the month’s biggest fields, a reminder of how much of the country’s chess activity runs through recurring local series rather than standalone opens.
