India's October Grassroots Rush Fills Asia's Calendar
Asia’s October slate runs to 181 tracked tournaments, and once again India supplies most of the volume and nearly all of the biggest fields. The month opens with a mix of national opens, school championships, and rapid weekenders spread from Kerala to Kolkata, with a few regional entries from Indonesia, Malaysia, and Bangladesh breaking up the pattern.
The largest field by a clear margin belongs to the 2nd Early Bird NL Pandiyar Memorial Lakecity, a classical event running October 25 to 29 at the Orbit Resort in Udaipur. It has 401 players registered, organized by Buddhibal Seva Sansthan under the Rajasthan Chess Association, well clear of anything else on the calendar.
Malaysia hosts the month’s other standout in terms of scale and ambition. The 1st Commonwealth Schools Chess Championship 2026 runs October 4 to 12 at the Cititel Midvalley in Kuala Lumpur, drawing 282 players under the Malaysian Chess Federation and Kuala Lumpur Chess Association. It is one of the longer events on the schedule and the rare one with an international, rather than national, remit.
India’s rapid scene stays busy throughout the month. The TATA Steel Chess Festival 2026 Event D brings 256 players to Kolkata’s Dhono Dhanyo Auditorium on October 10 and 11 under the age-group format backed by Tata Steel and the Dibyendu Barua Chess Academy.
The same weekend, Grandeur 10 - International Open FIDE Rapid Rating draws 219 players to Vadodara, with a companion blitz event on October 9 pulling in another 165.
Kerala offers a rarer classical alternative in a month dominated by rapid formats. The Classical FIDE Rated Tournament (Chess for Everyone) runs October 1 to 4 at Premier Chess Academy in Trivandrum with 200 players entered.
Indonesia contributes two national-flavored one-day rapid events worth watching. The JG Liem Rapid Chess Open Tournament 2026 takes place October 3 in Bandung with 200 players, explicitly excluding masters from the field. Later in the month, the Super Challenge Super Chess National Tournament 4 draws 148 players to the same city on October 18.
Bangladesh’s entry comes from Chattogram, where the Boalkhali Chess Rapid Rating Championship 2026 runs October 3 with 121 players under the local upazilla administration. It sits alongside a cluster of Indian school and district events in the 70 to 130 player range that round out the month’s schedule.
