September 2026 in European Chess: Craiova Leads a Crowded Continental Calendar

Europe’s tournament calendar keeps rolling into autumn, with 392 events tracked across the continent for September 2026. The list spans everything from big-field rapid opens to regional classical festivals, and a handful stand out enough to flag now.

Top of the pile by registration numbers is the Craiova Grand Prix Rapid 2026 in Romania, running September 12-13 with 256 players signed up under the Federatia Romana de Sah. It’s the largest field in this data set for the month, and its two-day rapid format should draw a broad mix of local and regional talent.

Spain features heavily this September. The 41º Open Ezkerraldea Basque Country - 34º Magistr runs September 8-13 as a classical event organized by Sestao Xake Taldea, with 213 players registered, good for second on the list. Spain also shows up repeatedly further down the table, including the XII Torneo Internacional de Ajedrez Carthagineses in Cartagena (September 18-20, 104 players) and the II OPEN INTERNACIONAL CIUDAD DE SANTURTZI on September 19.

Germany’s contribution comes from Würzburg, where the DSSAM 2026 GesamtlisteWürzburg 26.-27.09. draws 205 players for a two-day rapid event run by the Deutscher Schachbund, the national federation.

Serbia has a notable double-header in Subotica, where two editions of the ТРОФЕЈ СУБОТИЦЕ - TROFEJ SUBOTICE 2026 rapid tournament both take place on September 12, one drawing 203 players and a companion event pulling 177, both organized jointly by the city and the Serbian Chess Federation.

Italy offers two classical festivals worth noting: the 32° Festival Internazionale Grand Hotel Adriatico in Montesilvano, running a full week from September 7-14 with 119 players, and the debut 1° Festival Internazionale di Scacchi “Il Tesoro d” in Naples, September 18-20.

Elsewhere, Bosnia & Herzegovina hosts a week-long classical event in Međugorje, the MEĐUNARODNI ŠAHOVSKI TURNIR “I. MEĐUGORJE OPEN”, running September 13-19 with 107 players. Romania also has the Memorialul Mihai Molodoi la Șah, ediția a XVII-a at the Grand Hotel Ceahlău from September 25-27.
