September 2026 in North American Chess: Mexico's Independencia Circuit Leads a Packed Calendar

North America’s chess calendar for September 2026 runs to 117 tracked tournaments, and the biggest cluster by registration numbers belongs to a single sprawling event in Mexico built around the country’s independence holiday.

The COPA INDEPENDENCIA 2026Allende, running September 12-16, leads the pack with 83 registered players, one of several regional and age-group brackets under the Copa Independencia banner. A companion event, the COPA INDEPENDENCIA 2026Guerrero, draws 57 players over the same dates, while COPA INDEPENDENCIA 2026HIDALGO starts a day earlier on September 11 with 42 entrants.

The series splits further into age-restricted sections, including COPA INDEPENDENCIA 2026Sub13, COPA INDEPENDENCIA 2026Sub16, COPA INDEPENDENCIA 2026Sub9 and COPA INDEPENDENCIA 2026Sub11, all held in and around Ciudad de Mexico under organizer Roberto Navarro Segura. All told, the Copa Independencia name appears across nearly a dozen entries in this data, making it the dominant story of the month for sheer volume of registered players, even if the individual brackets stay in the double digits.

Outside Mexico, the Caribbean and Central America contribute a handful of notable entries. The II Copa de Ajedrez Caribbean Chess Academy (Open), a one-day rapid event in the Dominican Republic’s Distrito Nacional on September 27, has 54 players signed up, putting it among the better-attended events tracked this month. In Nicaragua, the II Edicion Torneo Blitz Ometepe Dual Agua y Fuego brings rapid chess to Isla de Ometepe on September 12 with 37 players, organized jointly by the Moyogalpa municipal government and two local clubs.

Canada’s contribution comes from Toronto, where the Toronto Chess Centre - Sept 27 - CYCC & OCC Qualif draws 36 players for a rapid qualifier tied to provincial youth and open championship pathways. A second Canadian event, the Sep. 13 Canadian Junior Scholarship with OCC & CYC in Markham, lists 15 players for its rapid format on September 13.

Further south, Costa Rica’s Lista Inicial - Torneo Rapid Perla del Pacifico in Puntarenas and Mexico’s Torneo de la independendencia “Guacamayas 2026” in Lazaro Cardenas round out the picture, the latter stretching across more than a week from September 12 to 20. Prize funds and rating requirements aren’t part of this data for any of these events, so attendance figures are the clearest signal of scale we have for now.

With 117 events tracked across the continent this month, September 2026 looks heavy on scholastic and club-level action, particularly in Mexico, where the Independencia holiday drives a wave of regional qualifiers.
