History

The Chennai Grand Masters was first held in December 2023, organised at short notice with support from the Tamil Nadu government. Gukesh Dommaraju won it on tiebreak over Arjun Erigaisi, a result that helped him qualify for the 2024 Candidates, which he went on to win.

It has since become a regular fixture with a Challengers section feeding the Masters. Aravindh Chithambaram won in 2024 after a playoff with Levon Aronian, Vincent Keymer in 2025, and Alireza Firouzja in 2026.
