Alireza Firouzja
The youngest player ever to cross 2800, beating Magnus Carlsen’s record by five months. Firouzja won the Iranian championship at 12 and became a grandmaster at 14.
He left Iran’s federation in 2019 over its policy against playing Israeli opponents and has represented France since 2021. That year he won the Grand Swiss, and in 2022 the Grand Chess Tour, and he played the Candidates in 2022 and 2024. He missed the 2026 edition on tiebreaks after placing third at the 2025 Grand Swiss.
In 2026 he scored his first classical win over Carlsen at Norway Chess, finishing third there, then won GCT Super Rapid & Blitz Croatia and the Chennai Grand Masters.
